Plans are announced to double the size of the car park at the station but is this a good idea? County transport body Metro says the scheme is scheduled to be carried out in 2015-16 (so don't hold your breath).

<quote>“People drive from Lancashire and North Yorkshire to use the station because they can access cheaper travel,” said Coun Mallinson. “Parked vehicles are causing problems in residential streets and clogging up the access to the nearby industrial estate, and some people are arriving at the station an hour before their train is due just to get a space.”</quote>

BUT is doubling the car park a good idea?

Why are we subsidising the residents of North Yorkshire and Lancashire? sad :(

Why do we have to take our lives in our hands to cross the A659? sad :(

Why is the bus service to and from the station so poor? sad :(

Why isn't there a drop-off point at the station for people that want to go in the Leeds/Bradford direction? sad :(

the westyorks metro card is now valid into skipton north yorks, which i think was a good idea as that includes connonley station as well so more parking there and in skipton would also be a good ideahappy :)

Notice which "councillor" has got his mugshot on this article? Yes, it is a good idea, but shouldn't it have been done years ago? If MALLINSON has ANYTHING to do with it, it will be late and well over budget, if at all.

The trunk road is the A629!
They charge to park in Skipton, perhaps they should charge for parking in Steeton/Silsden station car park with a pass sold at a small fee for residents of Steeton/silsden enabling them to park for free!
Profits made from the outsiders could be used to provide, both an overbridge and a drop off point.

Gazzer, I suggested a small fee so only those that wanted to use the station car park would go for one, and those that didn't would not have to pay for them to be produced through their council tax.

Sell the car park operation to NCP. Privatisation the obvious solution for this problem.

Old Minor I hope you are being sarcastic.
Privatisation is the wrong word to describe what is done when publicly owned assets are given away to the rich at vastly undervalued prices so they can then rip off everybody by charging inflated prices for that which we used to own, it should be called Profitisation.
just look at all the utilities that Maggy gave to all of her buddies.

It will be made larger whether we think it should or not and people will be charged to park there. Their aim is to get as much money out of people as possible and they'll use every excuse in the book to make it seem like they're doing the passengers a favour, such as providing 'increased security measures' ie installing one or two badly placed CCTV cameras and more lights. This plan has been on Network Rail's and Northern's agenda for at least three years, if not longer.

The carpark at Crossflatts station has recently been enlarged and is still free. I doubt they would introduce charges at Steeton they will just take the extra revenue through any extra footfall.

Taken from T&A 28th November 2008:

'Parking charges could be introduced at rail stations across the district, it has been revealed.
The proposal, outlined in a new report, is designed to generate income to fund future expansion of overcrowded station car parks.
The parking charges could also help to manage the soaring peak period demand for park-and-ride facilities, ensuring that spaces are still available for off-peak passengers.'

'The policy of Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority, is that car parking for rail users is free of charge wherever practical.
But the new report urges Metro to “re-think” its policy and consider introducing charges at some station car parks to fund construction of extra parking facilities.'

'Mr Hoggarth said some stations had parking restrictions on nearby streets and others did not, adding that any anomalies would be addressed.
The report said: A future expansion of car park capacity is likely to have to be supported by additional revenue generation.'

Well then (although 5 years is a long time ago laugh :D ) perhaps a scheme similar to Keighley will be introduced?

quote
A daily charge of £1 per day was introduced. This charge does not apply to holders of:

Annual MetroCards (Zones 1-4, 1-5 (+7), 2-5 only) or Keighley annual season ticket holders; however, holders of these tickets must get a car park permit from the ticket office to display in their windscreens.
A valid blue badge permit prominently displayed in vehicle.

The car parks are free to use by all rail users after 5pm Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays.

Except Steeton doesn't have a ticket office, so everyone would have to drive to Keighley to get a ticket, then drive all the way back to Steeton to park. javascript:smileyInsert(topicform.message, 'wink ;)');

In answer to Peters' question, it has to be yes. I went to Huddersfield recently via train and had to park down by the industrial units, in spaces allocated for them. I don't know where MALLINSON got the 200 car parking spaces from, bit I doubt there are that many, unless you count the kerbside spaces?

I regularly drop a colleague from Leeds at the station between 1730 and 1830. It is sheer madness down there with the volumes of traffic.
