This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Peter

yes:

Smoke Control Areas
Under the Clean Air Act local authorities may declare the whole or part of the district of the authority to be a smoke control area. It is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney of a building, from a furnace or from any fixed boiler if located in a designated smoke control area. It is also an offence to acquire an "unauthorised fuel" for use within a smoke control area unless it is used in an "exempt" appliance ("exempted" from the controls which generally apply in the smoke control area).

the DEFRA website lists Bradford as partly smoke controlled. Craven council's web site has maps showing parts of skipton & craven as being smoke control areas but bradford mets site has nothing

I rang up Bradford last summer when someone up the road from us was burning waste, pallets etc and suffocating us all with the smoke that was drifting down our way.

Bradford Met lady told me we are in a 'no burn' zone and this type of burning of garden and household waste is illegal. They said if I gave them the full address they would send a 'don't ever do this again' slap on the wrist letter and if they get repeated complaints they will take 'further' action.

Don't know if this is what you were interested in finding out, hope it's helpful not just me waffling on.

Unfortunately I can't find any evidence to back this up. I've been told Sutton was made into a smokeless zone and that Silsden was next on the list. For whatever reason it didn't happen and there aren't any (online) documents that I can find to show this.

This link for a Craven herald story last year shows craven is a smokeless zone.

Thank you for your enquiry relating to Smoke Control Areas within Bradford's Districts.

I can confirm that Silsden is not a designated smoke control area.

This means that there is no requirement on the residents of Silsden to burn authorised and smokeless fuels within a domestic fireplace/ stove.
However, an individual must still ensure that a nuisance is not caused to others through the generation of smoke or odour at their property.

I hope this information is of assistance. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Aliah Syed

Interesting....does the "no burn" policy apply to businesses as well as individuals?
We have had businesses burning all sorts near us from time to time.
