IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. Topic : Bridge Work |
|
| Baldybogey |
Starts Monday. Check out an alternative route, as you will more than likely need to take it over the next 9 weeks. www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news/newsroundup/display.var.1178037.0.bridge_work_at_silsden_means_delays_for_drivers.php |

I am not a gambling man, if I were I would bet they take a lot longer than nine weeks to complete this work. Remember the bridgework they did at the bottom of Turner Lane going down into Addingham a couple of years ago? 20weeks that was supposed to last they were still on with it six months later. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Theres work on the Bridge? All I ever see is a man sat in a van changing the lights (how much does that job pay?). Although I have noticed in a week they've managed to put a blue sheet over the pavement so it looks like they are ahead of schedule!!! |
|
| grandad |
I have noticed they are not working at the weekends, or at night. Maybe they should then this obstruction would be removed sooner, rather than later. I don't think it will be long before there is a shunt around the roundabout. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) I've never seen them working day or night! All I've seen is them eating and chatting (not just at lunch). I've already seen a few near misses on the roundabout. A lot of people seem to think that they don't have to give way to traffic on the roundabout because of the traffic lights and just pull out! |

Well they were concreting over the reinforcement grid the other day. What has surprised me is the number of people NOT using the back roads, especially the road to Skipton via Kildwick. I expected it to be crowded, but only a few more than normal. |

Shhhhhh "wahiba" don't tell the motorised 'sheep' there are better ways |

It looks to me like they are making a very good job of a difficult situation. The bridge is very close to the dual carriageway and it is inevitable queues will build up quickly, especially during peak periods. The traffic lights are manned and the traffic is not allowed to stand on the dual carriageway, inevitably it does occur for brief periods. The repairs are not a cut and cover job, anyone passing the works over the last few weeks will have noticed the complete renovation of the bridge structure and it takes time for concrete to set. The work is scheduled to last for 9 weeks. It is now 4 weeks since the work started and it looks like they are nearing completion of the renovation of one side of the bridge, soon you will be traveling over the new bit – I would suggest they are on schedule and there is no requirement to work costly overtime. The work has to be done. It’s a pity they didn’t do it properly last time when it was strengthened, (when the weight limit of lorries allowed to use our roads was increased by the EU). Stop winging. |

"Fred" they are doing a good job of controlling the traffic, no doubt. But I wonder why when they are doing such strategic works they only work normal days. No late nights, no weekends! Why not? Who are they going to disturb down there. All this claptrap about taxing us for causing congestion and in cases like this what do councils and government departments do to alleviate it? Answer - nothing! All those carbon emissions wasted waiting in traffic down there! |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) For those that think they can do the bridge repairs quicker and better I would suggest you go and tell the contractors how to do it! For those of us using the back roads to avoid the delays I would remind you that there may be something bigger than you round the corner and to drive at the appropriate speed for the road. Remember durring the mass Silsden exodus in the morning and whe you come home SOME people are going the other way. Alan, this is not the place for a discussion on congestion and traffic taxation, why not start another topic? |
|

Isn't it "Fred" even when it's linked to the bridge works? Having worked in construction for over thirty years I'd be more than happy to tell them! |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Two lorries trying to pass in Kirkgate causes more congestion and pollution than the bridge roadworks AND the bridge repairs are only going to last for 9 weeks! The congestion in Silsden has been going on for years. Two lorries trying to pass each other in Kirkgate can back the traffic up to Cringles, and in the other dirrection, to the dual carriageway. |

Shouldn't that be a new thread "Fred"? |

i think the point is,priority and urgency has to be uppermost in the repair of this bridge.a major arterial road must be urgent in time scale.come on let's see them grafting all hours,it would make me feel better.along with the other hundreds of miserable faced commuters stuck in silsden main street waiting to travel a mile to the bypass.while the bias is heavily weighted towards keeping the bypass clear. |

Walked across today and the final lane is fully concreted. I think the reason it gets left is to allow the concrete to set properly. Civil engineering is not my forte but I think a bit of to much to quickly and there is a problem. By the looks of it when the concrete is OK it just needs filling in and tarmac adding. |

| MATTSKI |
But isn't it funny that there was hardly any traffic today stuck at the lights, and what a coincidence it is that it's a school holiday, or should i be starting a new thread on this topic!! |
|
| MATTSKI |
At long last the lights have gone ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Don't get too excited yet "MATTSKI" my money is on them resurfacing the road from the bridge to Hainworth Road from the work they seem to be doing to the kerbs. That will be fun after this week when the kids are back at school! |

They don't seem to be taking the opportunity to widen the narrow pavement on the driving range side of the road.... another missed chance to make our lives safer. When will they bother to ask us what we want first? |
|
| chaz |
DIDN,T MIND THE LIGHTS MADE IT A LOT EASIER GETTING OUT OF BELTON ROAD APART FROM THE FEW INCONSIDERATE DRIVERS WHO STOPPED RIGHT IN FRONT NOT LEAVING A GAP TO GET OUT |
|
| wahiba |
I wondered why they did not widen the roadway. However, when you study it closely then the road would have to be built and made up on that side of the bridge. In fact it makes no sense to widen it, there is no benefit as the road on the Silsden side is only two way. Of course, if another road, a bypass? was to be built on the Silsden side then using the extra lane makes sense. The curious question is; why was the bridge built so wide in the first place? |
|
| alan |
"wahiba" you've got me curious now. Been driving over the thing for twenty plus years and it's just struck me how wide it is for that type of bridge. I'd be interested to know if anyone can tell us the history of the bridge and how it's ended up so wide? |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Try this link - www.bradford.gov.uk/.../0/DescriptionofGradeIIListedBuildingsinSilsden.pdf It seems that the bridge has listed status so any changes would be limited. |
