As the other topic has gone seriously off topic I thought I'd start a new one wink ;)

Need some help on cleaning alloy stanchions. On a couple of bikes the alloy stanchions are showing signs of very light corrosion, think from fly squash that was not cleaned etc. Anyone know a way to bring them back to new?

You could try 'Cif' cream which rejuvenates your stancions.

alan,i can't believe you've never heard of solvol autosol! i use a tube every year.swear by it.you can't avoid elbow grease though.unless you get some new fangled electric pollishing tool. i've seen them advertised in motorcyle accessory catalogues and the like.

alan, when you say stanchions,do you mean the bottom part of the fork or the top part?(i.e. the bit that slides down into the bottom part). the reason i ask is, if it's the top part, they are always chrome and unless you're very lucky, they have to be replaced or re-chromed. i had one pit on the upper leg and fortunately it came off with---.you've guessed it 'solvol'!

Once the stanchions get pitted its not going to be too long before you will be needing some new oil seals.
Then while they are stripped down you should get them hard chromed and re-ground, otherwise they will just fail again quite soon.
That would also be a good time give the sliders a good polish as well.
Unfortunately there is no "magic cure" for corroded forks.

It's just light surface corrosion on the alloy, but I presume that they are protected with a clear coat of some kind....

hope i've done this o.k.

bobber - good try but not quite right for the image insertion - the image insertion tag [IMG]http// AddressForImage[IMG] - the IMG should be img (ie lower case). If you use the little icon which looks like the picture of a mountain view it will insert the tags for you. happy :) Peter

I remember doing my Dads bikes with some kind of chrome cleaner in a black and gold/copper tube. We used to scrub it on with toothbrushes, but the name escapes me right now.

All I can remember was the packaging colour and the fact it worked a treat every time.
