I am hoping someone in Silsden maybe able to shed some light on a genealogy "brick wall" I have come across. I have found baptism entries in Silsden Parish Church from 1792 - 1800 for 8 children belonging to Mary Winkup. There are no entries prior to this date for any marriage in the name of Winkup. I was therefore wondering if Mary Winkup was not married and was therefore in receipt of Parish Relief. However, I live in Kent, and have no knowledge of the local area and I have been unable to find any information regarding where this information (if available) would be kept. If anybody could help me I would be most grateful. |

8 Wincup kids in 8 years - impressive
Looks like the first one was christened separately in Silsden, then the rest as a job lot much later. Like you, I wonder was it to ensure they were recognised as parishoners?
Have you noted Christopher Winckup, born 06 JUL 1801, christened in KILDWICK, YORKS 12 JUL 1801, son of Mary Winckup(no father mentioned again)? Kildwick is the next Parish, where historically Silsdeners went before they got their own church.
If you have no better responses, try the Bradford Family History Society which covers Silsden for a contact. Keighley Library may have records, Bradford Central Library has a good archive for Family History in the area. |

Thanks so much Ruby Widow for your help. No, I have not found this birth of Christopher Wincup in Kildwick. Could you please let me know where you found this information. I am really trying hard with this family but feel I am getting nowhere. If you are local, do do happen to know which Parish would be responsible for providing Parish Relief at this time and any ideas where I would look for the information now. Is Kildwick the name of the Parish itself or looking at the map, would it be Keighley? Any help however slight, would be appreciated. Its a long way from Kent where I live. Many thanks once again. My apologies Rugby Widow for not getting your name correct. Serves me right for being too vain to wear my glasses!! As a rugby mother, I can sympathise.

"Christoper" came off the good old IGI site, but I had the advantage of knowing Kildwick is close by and the historical connection. I'm in Silsden so if you'll give me a while, I'll make a few enquiries for you.

Hi Rugby Widow. You are a real star - thank you so much. Local knowledge is a wonderful thing. I wonder do you know of a place locally called Easton or Eastburn or similar and somewhere called Steeton Craven. The first place was mentioned by James Wincup ( my Gt x 3 grandfather) as his place of birth in the 1861 census and the second place is given as Thomas (his brother) in the same census. Any help would be much appreciated. Isn`t wonderful lst weekend of the rugby season upon us already. Are you Union or League?
Best wishes

Steeton is the village just on the other side of the River Aire from us. Craven is the district we currently live in - I'll check the 1800's relevance.
Rugby Union - I have to plan family events around fixtures until next summer again.
