After reading the article in the T&A about Bradford met cutting the £20,000 funding for local Christmas trees - www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/14165201._Scrooge__accusations_as_Bradford_Council_chiefs_plan_to_axe_spending_on_civic_Christmas_trees/ I followed a link provided by another reader, who gave a FOI request result into councillors income - https://www.bradford.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/18328E0E-86CC-426F-9C4A-9B055E2C4ADA/0/StatementofEarnings1stApril14to31stMarch15.pdf These figures provide an insight into how much these individuals are raking out of the public purse. I applaud Silsden Town Council on retaining the Christmas decorations on an annual basis. |

The reality is that schools today are heavily over populated with staff. Classroom assistants, playground supervisors, lunch time supervisors and the like never existed in my day 1950s. Head teachers did not have a class so unless a teacher's absence was long term the stood in. No doubt there are many more I have never heard of. The cause of the over staffing came about because the Tories decided that all teachers were rabid lefties leading the children away from the Tory truth. So teachers were to be controlled like every other worker. Teachers retaliated by dropping all the little extras, like after school activities and non teaching duties. As part of the 'control' process OFSTED and league tables were introduced, all costing money. With all this extra non work teachers could not return to the little extras even if they wanted to. You got what you voted for. |

quoteOld Miner what are you on about? He is claiming the party that he sometimes claims cuts back public services is responsible for over staffing a public service |

I certainly am. Incompetence and inefficiency are true Tory bedfellows. Also privatisation which provides plenty of government cash for their supporters. Anyone thinking Torys do not waste our money live in cloud cuckoo land. |

If you think that the government knows what is doing check out this link. Yes it is that awful lefty liberal Guardian. Yes the comments are obviously from useless lefty teachers - an awful lot of them!! www.theguardian.com/education/2016/jan/02/ofsted-row-ministers-extent-teacher-shortages-michael-wilshaw |

Of course it makes sense. Right wing politicians always try and direct government spending towards their mates. How do you think they get those nice consulting and director jobs when out of office? In all the shouting they take the masses minds off the real problems. Example today. Children to be tested on their tables, up to 12, at age 11. Sorry, but 60 years ago I was there, with the rest of the class, aged 8!! |

Do you agree the number of people working should be the same as the 1950's doing similar jobs. Would mean massive cutbacks because back then between a 1/4 and a 1/5 of the population did not work for local authorities. I think that would be too extreme but something will need to be done. The last Labour Government increased the number from 5.2m to almost 6.1m and I never noticed a jump in the service. |

50 years ago many more people worked for the state as there were more state owned businesses. Whether or not service quality and efficiency has improved with privatisation is open to debate? Many of the make work low paid jobs that now exist were created due to poor stragedy decisions, mainly by Tory governments. Blaming Labour is a Tory mantra that is wearing thin. Many today are down to Tory incompetence. I am not too going to claim Labour were perfect, but most education problems are down to Tory decisions. |

If you believe anything the Tories say, you need your head examining. They have announced £40M for Yorkshire flood repairs, only 10M is going to sort out the Foss flood gate at York, which doesn't leave much to replace the bridges at Ellend and Tadcaster. They were bragging that they had spend some money on flood defences, yet the boss of the environment agency said on TV that since the Tories came to power they have removed £1/2 billion from the agency funding. Lies, dammed lies and statistics. |

Check my earlier link to the Guardian to find out what many who made that decision actually ended up doing. As for governmental reaction to the floods, platitudes head into the sand pit. |

Lies, dammed lies and statistics. Was never like that in the good old days Massive spending on flood defences and better planning were recommended. Yet last year when Gordon Brown was Chancellor, the Treasury ordered the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to make £300 million cuts, putting vital flood defence schemes under threat, with the Environment Agency planning £15 million flood defence cuts. Gordon Brown made a flying visit to the emergency services HQ in Gloucester but ignored those who've lost homes and possessions. The leisure centre is now the evacuation centre. |

Surely if the Environment Agency under Labour had maintained and put mitigation plans in when there was money for The Foss Barrier it wouldn't have failed? |

quoteSurely if the Environment Agency under Labour had maintained and put mitigation plans in when there was money for The Foss Barrier it wouldn't have failed? It does not matter which party is in power they dont spend money on issues that are not current issues, but either party supporters always claim it is just the other lot to blame |
