jeesus what is wrong with people round here??..
do any of the dog owners about actually have any responsibility for their pet or is it simply someone elses problem.. to make matters worse there are a number of people who are bothering to bag it, only to chuck it into the nearest hedge at the first opportunity, anyone that has walked along the lanes and canal hereabouts will know what I mean..
I see that out near the sub station the landowner has seen the need to fence off his land to prevent his cattle from eating the dog crap and to stop it from finding it's way into the food chain..

are these people so stupid that they don't even realise the potential problems for everyone around here.. letting your dog shit anywhere in the streets of silsden is sick and disguting and it is obvious that the threat of a fine is not working, perhaps because no-one is policing it properly, we should bring back the stocks for offenders or the modern equivelant of a public name and shame board, maybe peer pressure will succeed where threats of fines have failed..

if there is a need for wardens I will volunteer to do it for free.

alternativley I am offering to shoot any offending dogs stone dead thus ridding the village of the problem on a permanant basis..

so dog owners.. grow up.. act responsibly.. clean up your dogs mess.. and bin it..

this is a lovely place to live take some pride in it!!

Hi Mr Shark Average, and welcome to the forum....

This topic has been raised many times including the unbagged as well as the bagged issue..

In answer to your first part of the question.. YES all dog owners have the responsibility for their pet, and a lot exercise that responsibility very well...

I am afraid it is the minority that show no responsibility that are the problem. And in my opinion I agree with you…Yes they are stupid!

In regards to shooting dogs, it’s the owners that are responsible so shoot them…

The last comment is made in jest and is not the opinion of the site owners; please do not go out shooting people…

and 1 time i forgot my bags on belton road came back minus dog to bag it

dont tar everyone with the same brush please
every dog owner ive seen has baged it and taken it with them

yes thats something i dont understand either people baging it and leaving it
do they think the bag disapears over time?

Have raised this issue previously, and as a dog owner, I absolutely detest the people who do not act responsibly. We all get tarred with the same brush unfortunately. Like Pumbajunior, I walk along the canal to Kildwick with my little bags in tow. Along the way, they are hung from branches like some kind of ornament, or thrown under the hedges to try and hide them. WHY oh WHY do people go to the bother of picking up, and then disgard them willy nilly. It really does beggar belief. My other half came home one day, to report that some idiot had thrown a blue poo bag into the cattle water trough, needless to say, he retrieved and disposed of it. Not a thought for the animals that would be drinking from the trough. The footpaths are a mine field, surely they wouldn't want to tread in the stuff and walk it in to their homes, so why leave it for others to. I honestly do not have the answer to this problem. As in all walks of life, there are people who do not think or act with regard to anyone but themselves. A sad reflection on society as a whole.

There always has been and always will be irresponsible dog owners. I guess the advice is as usual if you spot anyone committing the offence, and I mean the human not the dogs, poor old dogs have to go somewhere, then note down a time, date, location and description of dog and owner and put the note in the police post box in the post office. Then hopefully one of the nieghbourhood team will go round and have a quiet word, after all it is an offence. Unfortunately I have never atcually seen anyone not pick it up, but I have seen plenty of poo and bagged up poo about.

It's such a shame as it makes of us responsible owners look bad.

I live near to both the schools in silsden and are sick of people taking their dogs in to the back alley behind my house for the purpose of letting their dogs do its buisness. I have actually had standing arguments with people who have started to walk off and i have shouted at them to come back and pick it up and usually they are so embarrased they do pick it up when i have given them a bag. I have phoned the dog warden to ask for advice about this and apparently a description is not good enough you need an address for them to persue it. I am a dog owner and i ALWAYS pick up what they do.(but because im a dog owner people assume that its my dog that does it outside my gate !) What idiot lets their dog do one right outside school gates ??? One of my other issues is people who walk their dogs off lead and then walk off when its doing one so they dont see it ! (one main culprit in silsden for that and dont even think the dog has a lead !)

hi everyone..

sorry for the foul language in my first post.. this is i feel a really serious issue about which i feel strongly...

I do not wish to shoot dogs or owners (not really) iI just wish people would act responsibly and that there were real consequences for dog fouling..

anyone that has kids and a pushchair will despair of dog mess all over the wheels, the park, the streets and so on.. question is... what can we really do about it??

it is about time the people of silsden stood up and made this an issue..

Totally agree with you Mr Shark, not so bad at this time of year but walking for a bus at 7.30 in the morning when its dark during Winter is no fun, a torch is sometimes required to avoid the little piles of delight.

Hi all, thats the big question what can we do about it ???? like i said in my last post i phoned the dog warden for advice and i was told without an address of the culprit they could not pursue it. I dont think following the culprits home to get an address is wise. I feel strongly about this also as the streets especially near the schools is covered and its not good when children are walking it into school.
Ideas please ????

Basically the irresponsible dog owners are simply lazy and inconsiderate.

No one has mentioned it (possibly because it is very likely none of them look at this website) but has anyone given any thought to those people who are blind/visually impaired?
- How can they possibly avoid stepping in dog poo?

I suspect part of the training is only to do it in the garden or something.

I think that guide dogs may have planned eating schedules, and poop schedules. They are also very intelligent and can "indicate" to their owner somehow. There aren't many in Silsden, it's not a problem caused by blind people! Lazy owners I'm afraid.

Don't think grandson was saying it's blind people, he sounded just curious.

There's no doubt it's unthinking and careless owners!

I myself am a dog owner and it annoys me that other people can not be bothered to pick up after their dogs. It may make more of a difference maybe if there were more bins to put it in in the first place in silsden

Not only Dog poo thats a problem.

What about house owners who let the branches of their hedges and other plants grow out over the pavement?

These can take a pedestrians eye out if you are looking down for dog poo on the floor.

hmm, maybe if owners can't/won't pick it up they should train their dogs not to do it!

I suppose that what really needs to happen is that someone gets fined up to £1000, as per the law, the word gets around, and suddenly the dog crap starts to disappear into bags and bins. Trouble is......it never happens.

I think this is because they have to be witnessed by 2 people doing or not doing it, you need there name address, dob inside leg measurement. Yes the fining is great idea but they have made it so hard for people no one bothers to report them. They'll be wanting DNA match next. I can picture it now.... Monday morning, Jeremy Kyle..It's this poo really mine laugh :D

We were in Scotland a few weeks ago, they had bins for dog poo and they also had a dispenser next to it that held poo bags, fantastic idea, didn't see any poo there.

This is correct.. They are trained to do it on command the trigger word being "Busy". All dogs can be trained to do this, and they don't have to be puppies to start learning. You can teach an old dog new tricks. You can choose your own trigger word of course but keep it to a word not a sentence.

Again this is down to the owner to sort not the dog. So if you are one of the many that leave poop rather than picking it up as your embarrassed then take the time to train your dog to do it in the privacy of your garden.

Ohhh and don't be silly and start shouting busy every time you see a guide dog just to test this out as they know when the harness is on they don't do it....

The first person I ever saw picking up their dogs poo was a blind person in Leeds. The dog had pooed in the gutter and the blind person, with plastic bag on hand, found it by feel and duly picked it up. Dog stood there looking bemused.

After witnessing that I know that only a physical disability could prevent any sighted person doing the same thing.
