IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. I don't use the health centre in Silsden, so please can somebody who does ask the questions Peter has posed above next time they are there? there seens to be some general interest in taking this subject further, So I suggest we look deeper into both local First aid courses, and obtaining one or more devibs in the New year. |
|

KFA Medical offer first aid courses but you really do not need one to use the defibrillators, lets not make it harder than it is. Another idea is to speak with all the pubs and clubs and gain their support in them raising money for their own defibrillator. That would be the perfect spread of the machines, the length and breadth of the village. Be better if Gazzer took it all on, at least it would be sorted instead of just talking, let Silsden.net pick up the mantle and lead the way for other towns and villages to follow. It is pretty simple to set up a Just for Giving account similar to the Air Ambulance one. www.kfamedical.com/ |

No you don't need training to use one but you can have a thousand of things but they're useless for the countless other life threatening conditions that they don't treat but that basic first aid does. Yes it's good to have a few round town, as mentioned, town hall, co op, a couple of the pubs maybe and the health centre but don't get lulled into a false sense of security, defibs only save lives for a very small number of specific cases. |

quotedon't get lulled into a false sense of security, defibs only save lives for a very small number of specific cases. You are obviously genned up on medical matters, but surely if it saves one life then it is worth it? If you read articles about these machines, they seem to be used widely, and save a lot of lives. They should be widely available around our town to give confidence to people. |

Perhaps we could keep the defrib in the Town Hall and get the Caretaker trained up to use it!! |
|
| Listener |
Keighley First Aid Medical have given us a price of £900 including VAT and will donate £100 towards one. |
|
| grandad |
There will not be a caretaker in the Town Hall! and anyway I wont be setting foot in that death trap ever again. So it looks as if we could get one for £800 net? I think that is an achievable target, now where to keep it? if it is in the coop their opening times would be an advantage, one possible problem might be that if it is somewhere handy; which ideally it needs to be; knowing how often they get robbed it will not last long, we need to have a word with them. Maybe they will contribute to one if it is handy for them to use on a customer in distress? |
|

So lets get Gazzer to crack on with what he intended to so, find a site and raise the cash. He can also put the idea to all the pubs and clubs to see if they will raise cash for their own. |
|
| grandad |
Listener, yes that sounds a good idea, but has I have said in previous post, it needs to be seen to be completely above board, I and probably many other people who are very happy to contribute to this good cause have no idea who Gazzer is. |
|
| twigg93 |
guys, another idea might be having a collection point in a local business. I'm sure there are many businesses that would oblige I know my dad at the newsagents I'm sure would be happy to do it. Another idea possibly would be using posters and leaflets or maybe even getting something in the press to get it out there. |
|
| grandad |
Yes, this is the sort of ideas we need. If we could get enough people interested? Maybe we could take this forward and not only get some defibs, but also organise a group who can regularly hold first aid training courses, not necessarily up to fully qualified standard, but giving the public enough basic knowledge to help in the first instant before more qualified personnel arrive. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Now we are talking, and moving forward, Twiggs is an excellent idea to pay in donations. What we need now is an accountant who can tell us how we could save the £180 VAT, legally and with the £100 donation from KFA the target figure could be even lower. Let the "Heart Beat Appeal" begin... Who will volunteer to visit the pubs and clubs to see if they will hold their own fundraising events to purchase their own, it does not matter if it takes months and months, at least we are making some effort? |
|
| twigg93 |
is it worth doing some posters to put up in pubs clubs etc. I'll be happy to make one once I know the content to put on their..... |
|
| Listener |
Posters are a great idea, can we now leave all the organisation to you Grandad as a well known and well respected member of the community and the originator of the post? I am on silsdenafc@hotmail.com if you need me, but lets get it moving asap. |
|
| grandad |
Listener, I will put it to the Town council at their Jan Meeting, and no you can't leave it all to me, this needs a group of like minded people to carry it forward. |

Christmas Eve, and still not sure what to ask Santa for, well, here is a suggestion. Why not ask for a donation to be made on your behalf to our Silsden.net "Heart Beat Appeal" for our first villages Defibrillator? Donation destination to be posted after Christmas. Maybe twigg93 could ask if we can put a collection bucket in Twiggs newsagent. Merry Christmas to Everyone and a Peaceful New Year |

this post has been edited 2 time(s) I think Listener should be in chanrge of organising this as he seems so keen...that or Floyd who was also so vocal....but then again he seems to have gone very quite on the subject... |

You still haven't identified a problem and if any defrillators already exist in the area. A little information from those that should know: www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/life-saving-skills/defibrillators.aspx |
|
| Listener |
My keenness Dozi is because i suffered a heart attack in 2002 and open heart surgery in 2007 i know the importance of a speedy response and treatment of any suspected heart attack sufferer. Raising the awareness is perhaps my way of increasing anyone's chances who may have a heart attack whilst in the village center. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Peter, I have also been advised to look at this site, called Heartstart, also from the BHF. www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/how-we-help/training/heartstart-uk.aspx I will do some research after Christmas. |

| Dodzi |
Does this mean you'll be taking this further then listener |

I will do what i can to help, as i`m sure we all will Dodzi |

No defibrillators held at either chemist or library in Silsden. Doctors and Fire Station still need checking but would be too far away from the Main Street anyway. The idea is to have it/them as near to the main village shoppers as possible. |

There are 4 of these machines already in Addingham, with another on the way soon, and the latest one is in a pub on the main street. We have some catching up to do perhaps. |

quoteThere are 4 of these machines already in Addingham, with another on the way soon, and the latest one is in a pub on the main street. We have some catching up to do perhaps. |
| greengrass |

|
| ginjo |
Addingham is better than silsden! (that should get a few responses) |
|
| greengrass |
My doctor is in Addingham because there better there which just proves if your thinking off having a hart attack go to Addingham because you will die in Silsden |
|
| Keith Lemon |
What a typically pointless "going nowhere" thread... Loads of big ideas and only a handful of folk ever do anything!! Where's localman when you need him to get onto these moaners??!!. If its gets put in a shop of any kind lets hope people only have a heart attack in opening hours then eh?!! crazy... |
|
| grandad |
Keith, I have found lemons to be very bitter and sour, You appear from your last post to be likewise. It is less than a month since I asked a simple question which as produced many very good ideas, I have already said I will take this to the Town council and also said I will do some research after Christmas which I am doing! Remember Fools rush in. This will happen and I hope also we can get an ongoing training scheme set up. If you can't say something useful than don't say anything at all. |
|
| greengrass |
So there you have been told lol |
|
| k.j.i |
They do talk to you once opened. I work in addingham and there are 5 there. In local businesses within the village have them. There is training which is offered for people who want to know how to use them which is free and its held across from the fleece pub. Maybe its worth someone talking to the people who organise the machines for Addimgham. |
|
| grandad |
Thanks for this info, I have already arranged to meet with the main man in Addingham, I will take everything I learn to the next Council meeting on Thursday. Watch this space for further info. |
