IMPORTANT PLEASE READ This website and forum has been living on borrowed web server time for years. At the end of this month silsden.net in it's present form will cease to exist, BUT there is a new silsden.net in the making, and a new forum, and lots of exciting new things coming to this space. quoteThanks for this info, I have already arranged to meet with the main man in Addingham, I will take everything I learn to the next Council meeting on Thursday. Watch this space for further info. Well done grandad, this could save lives in our town |

Update of progress so far. I have visited the co-ordinator for the Addingham First Responder Group, he gave me loads of information, which I will take to our Town council, in the hope we can look at finding the best way to take this forward. Addingham have a wonderful set up; one which we should try and emulate, however they have taken 9 years to get to the stage they are now at, but we do not have to reinvent the wheel we can use their expertise to move our scheme along faster. This will only happen; IF there are sufficient people in Silsden who are willing to give a little time to make it work. After the council meeting I will be arranging a public meeting; so interested people can come along and find more about how it can work, the Addingham Co-ordinator says he will be pleased to attend to answer any questions we might have. Watch this space, and the local press for details. |

Can I just ask has anybody been in touch with the NHS regarding first responders www.communityresponders.yas.nhs.uk According to the website there is already a community responder in Silsden located at BD200DQ which I believe is somewhere up Elliot Street. I am sure the above could provide some useful information on this project. |
|
| grandad |
Yes I am on with this. I have found out that the Silsden first responders need more people to come forward to train to become responders, I am looking at possibly becoming a responder, if there are anybody out there who is interested let me know and we can take this forward as a group. |
|
| grandad |
Sorry; but I need to correct a small mistake I made in a previous post, First responders are those employed my WYAMS these travel in fast cars, what I should have said in Community responders. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) It is with great pleasure I can announce that last night Silsden Town Council lead by it's Mayor Councillor Chris Atkinson, agreed to fund the purchase of out first defibrillator! I have an appointment to meet with the WYAMS Community Defibrillator officer on Tuesday to arrange the details of getting it. Many thanks to Cllr Atkinson and the Council for this vital first step on our journey to catch up with Addingham. Watch this space for more news. |

Fantastic news, perhaps somebody needs to speak to Listener as he has a contact who will give a good price on one of these. |

Well done grandad, and the council. A good use of local council tax. STC should buy one every year out of the local council funds, until we reach the target, and local efforts to raise money could supplement this. |
|
| grandad |
Dexter, than you for your support, I am hoping to arrange a meeting so anybody interested in this subject can come alone to learn more, and if they wish get involved in helping to make it better. It is not a simple case of getting any defib on the market and putting it somewhere, to get the best out of them they need to be liked in with the WYAMS, please come along to the meeting when it is arranged to find out more. |

Meeting arranged to take place at St James Church Hall Saturday 22nd Feb between 2.30PM and 4PM. Please come along to see what has been done so far, and the future plans for this very worthwhile cause, the local community responders and the West Yorkshire Ambulance Service Defibrillator officer will be there to explain everything and answer questions. Don't be shy you wont be pushed into anything, it will be a great chance to find out more about this important subject. |
|
| grandad |
Please don't forget the above meeting, I will be putting up some posters a bit nearer the time, if you put the date in your diary now you wont double book! |

I'm afraid I'm not free this Saturday. |

Sorry Grandad i can not make it at the weekend, really wish i could have re scheduled my day as it is of great interest and importance to me. My tenner is still good and i have added the event on Saturday to the 600 + Silsden Football Club Newsletters i send out locally every month. Did i mention previously we now have a defrib at the sports club? |
|
| grandad |
Great news the meeting has been mentioned twice in the weeks Keighley News! So I am hoping we get a good turn out for this important event. 2.30 PM St James Church Hall this Saturday, please do come along. |

Listener it is great that the club now have a defib, can I ask, (1) is it just for the club use? (2) if it is one of the ambulance approved ones could it be linked in with the emergency response they provide? The one the Council are providing will be linked and will show up on their screen of available units in case of an emergency, for any one to use. |
|
| greengrass |
Well I was there and I donated a tenner a shame there was a few missing |
|
| grandad |
Yes Thank you Greengrass, the turnout could have been a bit better, but never the less thank you to all those who did come along, hopefully you found it useful. At a later date possibly when the night get lighter and the weather better we will have another session maybe with a bit more focus on First aid. watch this space for more info. |

The defibrillator at the Spots Club is for any person needing it when the sports Club is open Grandad. It obviously needs to be locked up and is in the Physio room but whoever opens up has a key for the room. Our throughput a week can be over 500 so security is a big issue. No it is not linked and is an approved one from Keighley First Aid, we would have no issues at all in it being linked. They provide 4 free places for tuition and first aid, takes about 2 hours. Can we now get the one offered for Silsden by the council purchased and sited, we are possibly putting a life at risk waiting for better lighter nights please? This link has been running over 2 months now and thank God we have not needed one and now we have the TDF pending, lets be ready with at least one in the main street. |

Listener sorry if you misunderstood my previous post, the defib which Silsden Town Council are purchasing along with the life box to house it; are already on order, the delivery for them are, the box 4 weeks, the defib 4 to 8 weeks, they will be erected outside the Parish Church Hall door, access to the defib will be given by the Ambulance service if and when they feel it is required, so the first thing has always is to phone 999 and follow their instructions. The part about another meeting is totally separate from the instillation of hopefully this first of many defibs. |
|
| grandad |
The box to house the defib is now secured to the Church hall wall, the defib will be intalled as soon has we receive it. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Let me get this straight Grandad. In the very precious "Golden Hour" of any emergency, and in our case someone`s heart stopping beating, we have to; Get our self to the Parish Church Door, up about six steep steps, not ideal for most elderly. Dial 999. Be put through to ambulance emergency service. Listen to the instructions. I think i have missed something here, like how do we remove it from the box and get it to the patient who lets say is by the Coop, or by the Robin Hood, saving vital minutes is imperative here at this stage, if the defibrillators work in a very safe and simple way without phoning anyone. An example is, this is what happens to ours, grab it and turn it on, follow the 4 simple instructions, the defrib once attached to the patient will not give a shock if it detects a heart beat. Wish we had had an input into the siting of the first one, like the Coop was mentioned as the ideal first sitting. Not knocking anyone but being a heart attack victim think we need to put in more thought next time we site one, and get a general consensus of the people in the village. I still think pubs and clubs are a great idea, along with the Coop. |

I'm sure Grandad will answer fully but, you would never leave the patient to get a defib! In the unlikely event you are on your own, you call on a mobile/ shout loudly etc. there's more chance that the victim has collapsed from something that the defib can't treat, so staying with them and giving CPR is a priority. Whoever turns up goes and gets the defib. From what was posted earlier, the ambulance control remotely open the box once you ring them. So really, the only time lost, is the time waiting for help to go and get the defib (obviously making the massive assumption that most people have a mobile). And as grandad will no doubt say, the more defibs available, the less time it takes to get to one in an emergency. Sadly, the locked boxes are a necessity in our modern society. |
|
| steetonblue |
With regards to putting them in pubs, clubs, coop. I assume the decision has been made based on location (Central) and 24 hour access, what happens if someone collapses after the pubs close. By all means get them in their but the first one(s) should be accessible 24/7 |
|
| Listener |
All great points steetonblue, and fully accepted and taken on board. My point about pubs etc was more people about during opening hours so the % of possible patients is higher. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Listener, If only you had been able to get the the meeting held on the 22/02, you would have had all your answers, so I will try and give you that which you missed. If somebody thinks a person is having a heart attack then they should ring 999 immediately regardless of whether there is a defib to hand, Do we agree on this? When the ambulance service answers the call they will decide the next course of action, if they agree that a heart attack looks likely, then they will dispatch their crews, they will ask if a defib is available, if there isn't one then they will look on their board which gives them the location of all of the ambulance service units including their defibs in the area, OK are you still with me? If there isn't a defib available they will ask if there is somebody who can go the nearest one and bring it back to the patient, in the case of a life box they will also give them the code to get into the box, is that now clear? If we had put this one say in the coop or any of the pubs it wouldn't have been accessible say at 2AM, Until I started this how many people even knew there were any defibs in Silsden? You are complaining that the public were not consulted; well they were, we held the meeting and only about ten of them came along, you said on here that you were too busy to come, now you want us to take your views into consideration, I have discovered over many years working for Silsden that there are the talkers and then there are the doers. Whilst I am not taking the credit for getting the life box and defib for the Town, without the work done by the group who have brought this to fruition there would not be any defib available to the general public, and even if your club would allow a member of the public to take yours it is a long way from the top of the town to the football club, possibly only to find it is closed |

I also take all your points on board Grandad, (not too happy about being talked down to though at 60 odd years old) For the record, i`m a doer, and your last couple of paragraphs apart from being disrespectful to me are also conjecture. |

I did and have, silsdenafc@hotmail.com if you want contact |

| grandad |
Listener, do you now understand both why the box is where it is and how the system will work? |
|
| gazzer |
Listener...let them get on with it, you offered to source one for just £800 and it was turned down and I offered to raise funds and had my integrity questioned. Sometimes you have to give in. Maybe the football club should see about raising the money for another one. |
|
| grandad |
Gazzer I did not doubt your integrity, and for information we have managed to get our defib for £750. |
|
| Listener |
this post has been edited 1 time(s) Probably right Gazzer, i`ll just carry on working for the community behind the scenes. |

this post has been edited 1 time(s) Listener, please will you answer my question above. Also I will add that the site and the fact that it is in a life box is on the recommendations of the Ambulance service. |
